Our Story

Chamrousse History

1828 : Cradle of alpine skiing, Henry Duhamel pioneer.

1929 : Ski club and access route foundation.

1950 : Birth of Chamrousse ski resort, convention between Isère department and the Société d’Aménagement de Chamrousse.

1961 : Construction of Roche Béranger (Chamrousse 1750) with a residential area, in addition of the other activity pole (Le Recoin, Chamrousse 1650).

1968 : Welcoming of the 10th Winter Olympic Games in Grenoble (ski contests took place in Chamrousse), leading to important urbanism works and a complete remodeling of the ski resort (road access, two new activities hubs: Roche-Béranger and Bachat-Bouloud, housing)

1989 : The municipality of Chamrousse was created.

2005 to 2007 : Rehabilitation of Bachat-Bouloud villages and construction of three tourism residences.

2013 : Landscaping of the summit site of the Croix de Chamrousse (a comprehensive environmental approach with a focus on enhancing the site's tourism potential).

2018 : Celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Grenoble Winter Olympics

The Need for a New Paradigm in Chamrousse Tourism

Climate change poses significant challenges for ski resorts like Chamrousse, leading to issues such as "cold beds," where accommodations remain empty due to unpredictable snow conditions. The traditional model of "all-ski" tourism is becoming increasingly unsustainable, as warmer winters reduce the reliability of snow coverage, resulting in a decline in winter sports enthusiasts. Additionally, mass and seasonal tourism can have detrimental effects on both the environment and the local community, straining resources and infrastructure. To adapt to these changes, there is a pressing need to develop a new model that harmonizes with the mountain ecosystem and involves collaboration among various stakeholders, including the municipality, lift operators, the École du Ski Français (ESF), and the tourism office. This integrated approach can foster sustainable practices that benefit both the local population and the environment while enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Our extensive array of activities—ranging from paragliding and skiing to hiking, ski touring, wildlife and floral heritage exploration, snowshoeing, and climbing—caters to all customer profiles, including families, sports enthusiasts, youth, children, and retirees. By promoting an inclusive and adaptable mountain experience, we strive to ensure that everyone can enjoy the beauty of the mountains, regardless of their interests or abilities.
